For cosmetic products with a shelf life of more than 30 months, indicating a best-before date is not mandatory. For such products, the period after opening (PAO ) indicates how long the product remains safe and can be used without harm to the consumer.
Post-opening date (PAO): This symbol indicates how long the product remains usable after opening (in months and/or years). If the period is given in months, it may be represented by a number followed by the word "month(s)" or by an "M" inside or next to the glass symbol. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require manufacturers to print expiration dates on cosmetic labels. However, the European Union requires expiration dates, but only for products with a "minimum shelf life" of more than 30 months.
PAO Symbols
For cosmetics with a shelf life longer than 30 months, the symbol of an opened cream jar must be printed on the packaging, indicating the period of use after opening.
The symbol and the designation "12 M" indicate, for example, that this product can be used safely for 12 months after opening for the first application. The specified period varies depending on the product.
Therefore, if you open a product with a printed date of 06/2025 and a PAO mark of «12 M» for the first time in June 2025, you can still use it without hesitation for another 12 months – i.e., until June 2026.
